IB Economics is a two year subject that has 4 major components each of which is covered in a semester. The course has two levels of rigor: Standard Level (SL) and High Level (HL).
Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics and Economic Development. Microeconomics examines companies, consumer choices, opportunity cost, supply and demand in markets, and invisible hand. Macroeconomics examines countrywide and institutional economics. The subjects are unemployment, inflation, taxation, fiscal and monetary policies. International economics examines the economic activities among countries. The major topics are international competitiveness, exchange rate systems, balance of payments, export-import policies, trading blocks, economic integration, and dollarization. Economic Development brings the IB students to the latest thinking in economic activity and its effects on societies. GDP is just one measure of development.Economic Development examines the effects of foreign aid, technology transfer, healthcare, longevity and education on welfare of societies.
While most of the topics of SL and HL Economics overlap, the most fundamental difference is that the HL students will be required to make numerical calculations to estimate the concepts from given data while SL students are required to know the concepts and should be ready to discuss them in exams. For example, inflation and unemployment will be covered for both SL and HL syllabi but only HL students will be expected to find numerical values for CPI and unemployment from data in cases. Some complicated topics such as terms of trade, Keynesian multiplier, and tax incidence will be covered only in HL but not in SL.
Students who want to be placed in Economics, Business, or Engineering programs in one of the best universities of the world are recommended to take IB Economics.
The students are required to write 4 Internal Assessments, 3 of which constitute the IA portfolio, which is evaluated by the IBO testing center in UK. The students take an external final exam, evaluated by IBO testing center in UK, usually in June at the end of their two year program. Economics is a popular subject to write an Extended Essay (EE) to complete the IB Diploma Program.
The students are required to write a 4,000 word extended essay to finish their IB Diploma program if they choose Economics to write their Extended Essay in. The topic of the essay will be an application oriented economics topic that can be measured in their immediate location for HL students. The topic can be theoretical for SL students.
