International Baccalaureate or IB program is an internationally
recognized program that leads to a high school diploma, which
enables students to receive acceptance to top schools around the
world. The IB program has 4 stages geared towards students of age 3
to 19. Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, MIT and many other top schools
are happy to accept new students with the IB diploma. The students
learn to think critically and scientifically in the IB program.
Advanced Placement (AP) exams are administered by the
college board
and developed by the
Educational Testing Service
(ETS). They enable students show their skills to admission officers
and earn college credits towards their degrees. They take place
every year in May. AP is scored out of 5 and top school contenders
usually have a number of AP scores. For example, a typical Harvard
student has an average of 6 AP scores all of which are 5s.
Advanced Level (A Level) is a two-year education and qualification
system developed by Cambridge Assessment International Education ,
which is part of
University of Cambridge
. It is provided by 10,000 schools in 160 countries worldwide as of
2018. An A-Level education opens the doors to best universities
including the ivy league schools, such as, Harvard, MIT, Brown,
among other. Top universities in the UK, USA, Ireland, Canada,
Australia, India, Singapore, South Africa, Netherlands. Germany, and
Spain accept A-Level candidates gladly.
Advanced Subsidiary or AS Level is a one-year education and
qualification system developed by Cambridge Assessment International
Education, which is part of
University of Cambridge. It is provided by 10,000 schools in 160 countries worldwide.
AS-Level introduces students to Advanced Level Or
A-Level
program. AS Level can be taught as a standalone program, or can be
used as a stepping stone to the A-Level program by your school.
Schools as for a combination of AS-Level and A-Level courses and
certain thresholds to be exceeded for matriculation. The
combinations in recent years tend to include Ordinary Level
(O-Level) and A-Level.
International General Certificate of Secondary Education or IGCSE is
offered by
EDEXCEL, which is an education examination institution owned by
Pearson Inc, which is an educational publishing company. IGCSE is harder than
traditional IGCSE curriculum offered in the UK. Students in 9th and
10th grades can take IGCSE. Like the
AP
system, IGCSE is an exam based qualification. Therefore, students
can register for exams without enrolling into a school that offers
IGCSE courses. Upon successful completion of IGCSE, the students can
continue with vocational school or
A-Level
courses.
The SAT is administered by
college board. Scoring high on SAT helps students gain access to best
universities. SAT was redesigned in 2016. The redesigned SAT has 5
sections:
1) Reading
2) Writing and Language
3) Math (No Calculator)
4) Math (Calculator Allowed)
5) Essay (Optional)
American College Testing (ACT) exam is developed and administered by
ACT. It is an alternative to
SAT. Gaining competitive scores on ACT helps students with acceptance
into best colleges. The exam has four components:

3) Math

The exam takes 2 hours and 55 minutes without the optional essay and
3 hours 35 minutes with the essay
Test of English as a Foreign Language is administered by
Educational Testing Services
(ETS). TOEFL is taken to gain access to north american and top
european universities. A good score in TOEFL is a prerequisite for
nonnative speakers of english. TOEFL has evolved over time to have
different. The latest format is Internet Based Test (TOEFL IBT).
IELTS is owned and operated by three organizations:
British Counsil,
IDP IELTS Australia, and
University of Cambridge. It has two types: 1) Academic 2) General. The academic IELTS
should be taken to attend a university whereas IELTS general is
needed for professional business purposes. IELTS is the most
commonly taken english proficiency test. Students who wish to study
in Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and USA. The academic IELTS
measures students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking
abilities in an academic context. The speaking test is conducted on
a different day than the other three components. Speaking test is in
a one-on-one interview format.
