The Syllabus of AS Level Economics 9708:
The Cambridge International AS Level Economics 9708 syllabus covers six topic areas that together provide a comprehensive foundation in both microeconomic and macroeconomic thinking. The AS Level requires approximately 180 guided learning hours across one academic year and no previous study of economics is expected, though knowledge of mathematics equivalent to Cambridge IGCSE (Extended) is recommended.
- Topic 1 — Basic Economic Ideas and Resource Allocation: the fundamental economic problem of scarcity, choice and opportunity cost, positive and normative statements, factors of production including land, labour, capital and enterprise, division of labour and specialisation, resource allocation in market, planned and mixed economies, production possibility curves with constant and increasing opportunity costs, and classification of goods including free goods, public goods, merit goods and demerit goods.
- Topic 2 — The Price System and the Microeconomy: effective demand, individual and market demand and supply curves, determinants and shifts, price elasticity, income elasticity and cross elasticity of demand with formulae and calculations, price elasticity of supply, market equilibrium and disequilibrium, relationships between markets including complements, substitutes, derived and joint demand, functions of price in resource allocation, and consumer and producer surplus.
- Topic 3 — Government Microeconomic Intervention: reasons for intervention in public goods and merit goods markets, impact and incidence of specific indirect taxes and subsidies, direct provision, maximum and minimum prices, buffer stock schemes, provision of information, and addressing income and wealth inequality through minimum wages, transfer payments, progressive taxation and state provision of essential services.
- Topic 4 — The Macroeconomy: national income measurement including GDP, GNI and NNI, the circular flow of income in closed and open economies with injections and leakages, aggregate demand and its components, aggregate supply in the short run and long run, equilibrium determination, economic growth and its causes and consequences, unemployment types and consequences, and inflation including cost-push and demand-pull causes.
- Topic 5 — Government Macroeconomic Intervention: macroeconomic policy objectives, fiscal policy including budget deficits, surpluses and national debt, types of taxes and government spending, monetary policy tools, and supply-side policy, all analysed using the AD/AS framework.
- Topic 6 — International Economic Issues: absolute and comparative advantage with the trading possibility curve, protectionism tools including tariffs, quotas and subsidies, the current account of the balance of payments, floating exchange rates, and policies to correct current account imbalances.
Assessment consists of two externally examined papers: Paper 1 is a one-hour multiple choice paper with 30 questions worth 33 percent of the AS Level grade, and Paper 2 is a two-hour data response and essays paper worth 67 percent, divided into Section A with one compulsory data response question worth 20 marks, Section B where candidates choose one essay from two focusing on microeconomics worth 20 marks, and Section C where candidates choose one essay from two focusing on macroeconomics worth 20 marks. Calculators are permitted but formulae are not provided. For the complete official syllabus, visit the Economics 9708 page on the Cambridge International website.

I was struggling with the Paper 2 essays because I could explain economic concepts well enough in the first part of each question but I kept losing marks on the evaluation parts because I did not know how to weigh up both sides of an argument and reach a conclusion that was supported by the analysis I had written. Professor K taught me a method for the second part of each essay where I would identify two or three factors that could affect the outcome, explain why each factor mattered using a specific diagram or example, and then write a concluding paragraph that acknowledged the assumptions and limitations before stating my overall judgement. He was also extremely helpful with the data response question in Section A because he showed me how to calculate percentage changes and elasticity values from the data tables quickly and accurately and then interpret what those calculations meant in the context of the scenario described in the question. My supply and demand diagrams went from rough sketches that lost marks for labelling errors to precise diagrams that earned full marks every time. I achieved grade a and I genuinely believe the structured essay technique he taught me was the difference between a borderline pass and a top grade.
