IB Psychology
The Syllabus of IB Psychology:
The IB Psychology syllabus is built around three approaches — biological, cognitive, and sociocultural — supported by research methodology, and examined through six concepts: bias, causality, change, measurement, perspective, and responsibility. Students explore psychological knowledge across four contexts: health and well-being, human development, human relationships, and learning and cognition, developing the ability to evaluate theories and research using empirical evidence and critical thinking.
- Concepts, content, and contexts (SL 100 hours, HL 100 hours): students study the three approaches and research methodology, applying six concepts across four contexts to understand human behaviour from biological, cognitive, and sociocultural perspectives.
- Class practicals — minimum 4 (SL 30 hours, HL 30 hours): students design, conduct, and evaluate psychological research studies, developing skills in research methodology, ethical considerations, and data collection.
- HL Extensions — culture, motivation, and technology in shaping behaviour (45 hours) and data analysis and interpretation (45 hours): Higher Level students explore how culture, motivation, and technology influence behaviour, and develop advanced skills in analyzing quantitative and qualitative research findings.
- Internal Assessment — research proposal (SL 20 hours, HL 20 hours): students produce a research proposal demonstrating their understanding of research methodology, ethical considerations, and psychological theory.
Higher Level students sit three exam papers totaling four hours and forty-five minutes: Paper 1 covers concepts, content, and contexts and is worth 25 percent with a duration of one hour and thirty minutes, Paper 2 covers research methodology and is worth 25 percent with a duration of one hour and thirty minutes, and Paper 3 covers data analysis and interpretation and is worth 30 percent with a duration of one hour and forty-five minutes, with the IA research proposal accounting for 20 percent. Standard Level students sit two papers totaling three hours: Paper 1 worth 35 percent and Paper 2 worth 35 percent, with the IA research proposal carrying a larger weight of 30 percent. The IBO recommends 240 teaching hours for Higher Level and 150 hours for Standard Level across the two-year programme. IB Psychology turned out to be one of the most intellectually demanding courses in my diploma, and I am grateful I had Dr. Umit K. to guide me through it. He taught me how to evaluate psychological theories and research studies with the precision that IBO examiners reward, and he transformed the way I approached the extended response questions on Paper 1. My research proposal for the Internal Assessment improved dramatically under his guidance, and his deep knowledge of research methodology gave me the confidence to tackle every section of the exam. The critical thinking and analytical writing skills I developed in IB Psychology with Dr. Umit K. became one of the strongest elements of my Princeton application. I wholeheartedly recommend To Best Universities to any student who wants to achieve their best in IB Psychology.
