IGCSE Accounting (9-1) 0985
The Syllabus of IGCSE Accounting (9-1) 0985:
The Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Accounting 0985 syllabus encompasses seven core topic areas that collectively develop a broad and practical understanding of accounting principles, spanning the recording of financial transactions through to the evaluation of business performance using accounting ratios. Around 130 guided learning hours are allocated across a two-year programme intended for students aged 14 to 16, and no prior study of accounting is expected.
- Topic 1 — The Fundamentals of Accounting: why accounting exists and how it differs from book-keeping, the function of accounting in supplying financial data to decision-makers, and the accounting equation that links assets, liabilities, and owner's equity.
- Topic 2 — Sources and Recording of Data: the mechanics of the double entry system using debit and credit entries, key business documents such as invoices, credit notes, receipts and bank statements, and the books of prime entry including the cash book, petty cash book, sales and purchases journals, returns journals and the general journal.
- Topic 3 — Verification of Accounting Records: constructing and interpreting trial balances, locating and rectifying errors both revealed and concealed by the trial balance, preparing bank reconciliation statements to explain differences between cash book and bank statement balances, and using sales ledger and purchases ledger control accounts to verify ledger accuracy.
- Topic 4 — Accounting Procedures: distinguishing between capital and revenue items in both expenditure and receipts, calculating depreciation by the straight line and reducing balance methods and recording the disposal of non-current assets, making year-end adjustments for accruals and prepayments, writing off irrecoverable debts and maintaining a provision for doubtful debts, and applying different methods of inventory valuation.
- Topic 5 — Preparation of Financial Statements: producing income statements and statements of financial position for sole traders, preparing partnership financial statements with appropriation and current accounts, constructing limited company accounts with share capital and reserves, assembling manufacturing accounts that distinguish prime cost from production cost, drawing up receipts and payments accounts alongside income and expenditure accounts for clubs and societies, and reconstructing financial statements from incomplete records.
- Topic 6 — Analysis and Interpretation: computing profitability ratios such as gross profit margin, mark-up, profit margin and return on capital employed, assessing liquidity through the current ratio and acid test ratio, measuring efficiency via inventory turnover, trade receivables turnover and trade payables turnover, comparing ratios across businesses and over time, identifying the information needs of stakeholders, and recognising the inherent limitations of financial statements.
- Topic 7 — Accounting Concepts and Modern Practice: applying core accounting concepts including going concern, accruals, consistency, prudence and the business entity concept, considering ethical responsibilities in accounting, and examining how technology and sustainability are reshaping accounting practice.
Assessment comprises two papers: Paper 1 is a one-hour-and-thirty-minute multiple choice examination containing 40 questions and contributing 30 percent of the final grade, while Paper 2 is a one-hour-and-forty-five-minute structured written examination with five compulsory questions worth 20 marks each, contributing 70 percent. Calculators may be used in both papers and candidates receive grades from 9 down to 1. The complete official syllabus is available on the IGCSE Accounting (9-1) 0985 page on the Cambridge International website.

I found the trial balance and bank reconciliation topics really confusing at school and my grades were slipping. My parents arranged sessions with Professor K and he completely changed how I approached the subject. He taught me to think through every journal entry logically instead of memorising rules, and he drilled me on the structured questions until I could complete financial statements under timed conditions without panicking. My confidence grew week by week and I achieved a grade 9 in the final exam. He is an exceptional teacher.
